Next Meeting - December 2

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, December 2 at 7 pm.
There will be no regular meeting in January.  The first meeting of 2015 will be on Tuesday, February 3, and the March meeting on Tuesday March 3.
We always welcome new members!

You'll find us in the annex of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Danforth (at Chester).
Enter through the gate at 171 Hampton Street along the west side of the church, the first gate past the playground. If no one's at the door to let you in, please knock.

Our guest speaker will be Sheng Xue, President (International) of Federation for a Democratic China.  She is also a journalist, a former reporter for Radio Free Asia and an author of three books.
She will speak to us about human rights in China.

We've taken the summer off, but will resume our regular meetings in September.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 9 at 7 pm.

Our next 4 meetings will be held at 7 pm on  April 1, May 6 and June 3 (the first Tuesday of the month).

In December we will meet at the Amnesty Toronto Office at 1992 Yonge St., 3rd floor (just north of Davisville Subway station.  Everbody is welcome!

Our speaker will be Rev. Majed El Shafie

Rev. Majed El Shafie is a human rights advocate and founder of One Free World International (OFWI). His human rights journey started in his native Egypt that he was later forced to flee. Rev. El Shafie was severely tortured and sentenced to death for his conversion to Christianity and bringing awareness to human rights violations related to religious persecution. Belonging to a very prominent legal and political family in Egypt, Rev. El Shafie had tried to work within the Egyptian system to reform the country’s human rights regime. Between the challenges he faced in these efforts, his firsthand experience as a survivor of religious persecution, the work he has engaged in since advocating for religious freedom, confronting governments that violate this fundamental right, and conducting fact-finding missions and humanitarian/rescue operations, he has obtained significant knowledge and insight into the dynamics of persecution of religious minorities by religious extremists and totalitarian governments alike.

Following Rev. El Shafie's talk, we will have a short business meeting.

Next Meetings in 2013

Our next 3 meetings will be held on October 1, November 5, and December 3 (the first Tuesday of the month) as usual, at 7 pm.

Usually you'll find us in the annex of St. Barnabas Anglican Church, Danforth (at Chester).  But sometimes when we have a guest speaker, we meet at the Amnesty International Toronto Office at 1992 Yonge St.  That's where we'll be for our December 3rd meeting.

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF LOCATION.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 2 at 7 pm.  Instead of our usual location at St. Barnabas, we'll meet at Amnesty International's Toronto office at 1992 Yonge St. (just north of the Davisville subway station), 3rd floor, at 7 p.m. Aubrey Harris, Amnesty Canada's Coordinator of the Campaign to Abolish the Death Penalty, will make a 30 minute presentation on the death penalty question, followed by about 30 minutes of questions and discussion. Afterwards, we'll have our regular meeting.

Next Meeting, Tuesday, May 1, 6 p.m.

Our regular meeting at St. Barnabas is cancelled.
Instead we'll meet an hour earlier at Amnesty International's Toronto office at 1992 Yonge St. (just north of the Davisville subway station), 3rd floor. This will enable us to make the final plans for our fundraising auction to be held on May 9 at the Granite Brewery.

Afterwards, at 7 pm, we plan to stay on to hear Lhama Tso, wife of imprisoned Tibet filmaker and prisoner of conscience, Dhondup Wangchen and see the film, Freedom from Fear.
Everyone is welcome to attend this talk and film at 7 pm.

On June 5 at 7 pm we'll meet as usual at St. Barnabas.
